Burst Pipes Damage TKE House

The end of January’s polar vortex unfortunately impacted the TKE house.  A pipe above the living room burst, causing a flood in the front room. In addition, both boilers used for heating were knocked out of service. Insurance will cover some of the damage but to what extent is unclear at this point.

The TKE house was not the only building with damage from the cold. Burst water pipes and other flooding-related problems have damaged 28 UW-Madison buildings, forcing 180 course sections to be relocated last Monday and Tuesday. Officials said the sub-zero temperatures last week followed by a rapid thawing in the past few days likely weakened building pipes and led to flooding.

Renovations to the heating and cooling system are part of the current capital campaign.
